Out of the Shadows Conference 2017

We are extremely excited to announce our 2017 Out of the Shadows Project Conference. The conference will take place at Swansea University, Singleton Campus on the 15th of September.

The conference aims at bringing together academics, teachers and students (14-18). The ultimate aim of the conference is to star bridging the 'intelligence gap' in school curricula. Pupils are required to learn about issues surrounding the evolution of warfare, powers of Presidents and Prime Ministers, Cold War and decolonisation, global politics; and yet, intelligence, espionage and covert action are not discussed. The conference will provide an opportunity to enrich the school curricula and the way the topics above are treated.

It will give teachers and students the opportunity to hear from leading experts in the field. Pupils will have an opportunity to experience learning in a seminar setting through role-plays conducted by PhD students.

The conference will be an all-day event divided into two main parts. In the morning, academics and early career researchers will give presentations on topics that are relevant to the school curriculum. In the afternoon, PhD students will run seminars and workshops with the pupils. Academics and teachers will work in groups (a sandpit model) to assess challenges, as well as develop and enrich lesson plans.

Interested teachers and schools should send an expression of interest by email to Dr Luca Trenta (l.trenta@swansea.ac.uk) by the 21st of July. They should include the name of their school, the courses taught and the number of students who will attend. There is a limit of 15 students per teacher, but we can consider expceptions.

The project is funded by a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award

It aims at establishing a network of ECRs researching covert action in US and UK history and at engaging secondary schools students and teachers.

Let's bring covert action to the classroom.
